Senior Justice Project
Legal Assistance for Seniors , Housing Assistance, Medical Access
In his final years, Marvin “Pete” Mobley—Madison County’s first Black police officer—faced the same struggles many seniors endure: housing loss, limited medical access, and dangerous overmedication. Though he had mobility issues, Pete was still active—fishing, driving, and engaged with life—when he was wrongfully placed in a nursing home and stripped of his home.
He fought hard to get out—and won. Once free, his health improved after being taken off unnecessary medications. He rebuilt his life, enjoying birthday parties, movies in the park, lunch dates, and reconnecting with his community. He became a symbol of resilience and joy in his final years.
Sadly, during Hurricane Idalia, he was sent back to a facility for short-term rehab. There, he suffered neglect, overmedication, bedsores, and sepsis—leading to his death in December 2023. Just after his passing, his home was legally returned. It now stands as the Pete Mobley Foundation Home, a place of healing and honor.
In tribute to his legacy, the city named Pete Mobley Avenue in his honor—a permanent reminder of his fight, service, and spirit. The Pete Mobley Foundation carries that legacy forward, working to protect and uplift seniors, veterans, and public servants who, like Pete, deserve dignity, justice, and love.
